< SLAM! -vs- Acers Highlights>

The SLAM! got off to a nice start with weekend with a come-from-behind 5-3 victory against the Hurricanes 96 behind the stellar pitching of Dana “The Container” with Nick coming in to close.  Next up was the Acers.  Boy it’s been a while since we played them.  The Acers are always a tough matchup, but this time the SLAM! got off to a quick 5-0 start and Nick held the Acers scoreless the rest of the way for a 6-0 complete game shutout.

The SLAM! was then defeated by the scrappy Rijo 97 club on Sunday morning 10-8.

What a great tournament.  The fields were spectacular, the competition was great and we had lots of great fun.  Swimming at the farm, getting our cars “TP’d” by the fugitives after beating them, fighting through the loser’s bracket, playing teams with different styles.  What a great time.

I am very happy to see how the girls have grown over this year.  With one more tournament left before the Fall season, I can definitely say this team has improved beyond my expectations this year.

The SLAM! battled the heat and a half a dozen teams over the weekend.  First up was the Capital City Lady Outlaws.  The SLAM! prevailed with a 3-0 win to get the ball rolling.  Next up was the Skagit Valley Thunder — the eventual champions of the tournament.  The SLAM! battled hard and lost 7-6 in a barn-burner of a game.

Off to the pool for the evening.

Saturday morning, the SLAM! came out on FIRE with a shutout victory over the Whatcom Warriors.  The SLAM! popped over for a nice team lunch at a local mexican restaurant and then returned to the fields to prevail over the Walla Wall Fusion.  Following that victory, the SLAM! shutout the Columbia Basin Ice and then in the 3rd back to back game in a row ( and 4th of the day ) took on our local rival, the Maple Valley Fugitives Black.

It was a very exciting game, but the SLAM! fell short 3-2 which ended their wonderful run.

What a great weekend.  Next up is the NSA Western World Series down in Portland.

The SLAM! bats were simply on FIRE on Sunday morning.  The SLAM! beat the Stilly Valley Crusaders 11-2.  The SLAM! was all ready to take on the Fugitives Black but in the end, mother nature had a tie for the two teams in store.

GO SLAM! — Let’s take this show on the road to the Tri Cities…sunny and 85, baby!

Despite the February-like conditions, the SLAM! got off to a hot start at Metros this weekend by beating the Fugitives 6-0 and then in a rain-resumed game at a different field, beating the Diamond Dusters 6-2.  The SLAM! hit the ball fairly well today and Nicole handled all the innings on the mound.  Nicole 25 strikeouts in 2 games spanning 12 innings… ( WOW! )   Faith took a ball 5 feet short of the right field fence and great plays were made all over the place.  Angela just missed a ball with a sweet dive at short and did some major damage with her bat today.  Dana hit a key 3-run, bases-clearing triple to break the Dusters game wide-open.  Breanna and Analee had some great sacrifice bunts and Mallori held down 3rd really well today in her 2nd tournament with the SLAM!

Next up for the SLAM! is the Stilly Valley Crusaders at Russell Road on….Father’s Day!

The SLAM! headed up North to sunny Marysville for the H&L Sports NSA Invite.  The fields were greatly improved from our last trip up north and they held up well despite a few overnight showers and some drizzle.  First up for the SLAM! was a matchup versus the Edmonds Stars.  Maddie took the hill and the SLAM! jumped out to a quick lead.  Nicole came in to close the game and the SLAM! won 5-2.  Game two featured the SLAM! versus Rijo 97.  It was a good defensive game for both teams and the SLAM! lost 3-2.  Our final matchup on Saturday was the Rising Stars.  The bats were on fire for that game and the SLAM! won 10-0.

When Sunday rolled around, the SLAM! found themselves matching up against the Seattle Spice.  Both teams played great defense through 7 innings.  Nicole pitched a WHALE of a game.  It took 2 innings of international tiebreaker to win it.  The SLAM! exploded in the 9th for 5 runs and advanced to play the Hurricanes 97.  The Hurricanes team was a well-coached group and they played consistently and runs started to mount.  The SLAM! was sent packing with a 7-4 loss.  Overall it was a great weekend.  The girls showed good improvement particularly in the area of bunting and fielding in the outfield.  Our pitching was very good for the entire weekend with all 4 pitchers contributing.

Next up for the SLAM! is the Western World Series.

Once again, the SLAM! gets into the gold bracket and this weekend, they did not disappoint.  It all started Saturday afternoon with a close 3-2 loss to the very tough Edmonds Starz team followed by a 4-2 win over the Khaos and a big victory over the Black Diamond Sparks.  The SLAM! bats were on fire on Saturday and our pitching/defense was solid.  Our outfield woes were shown to be a thing of the past as virtually everything “catch’able” on Saturday was caught.  Dana spent a fair amount of the weekend patroling Center Field.  Once Sunday rolled around, the SLAM! faced a very familiar team in the Maple Valley Fugitives Black.  The SLAM! took off to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back ultimately winning the game 5-2.

Next up for the SLAM! was a very solid Diamond Dusters Gates team.  The game was a back and forth battle with each team trading leads at the end of each inning.  In the end, the SLAM! was propelled to a 6-5 victory by a solo-shot home run by Courtney.  The title game featured the Hurricanes versus the SLAM! and the bats fell a little silent, as both teams played a tight game through.  In the end, the Canes won 4-1.

I could not be happier with how the girls battled and how the bats came alive this weekend.

Next up for the SLAM! is the H&L Invite up in Marysville this coming weekend.

The SLAM! has had a great week of practice.  The girls are having fun and you can see the girls gaining confidence.  This weekend, the SLAM! is playing in the Mosquito Invite.  The SLAM! won the tournament last year as a 12U and will be competing as a 14U this year.

The SLAM! is participating in the Acers Best of the Northwest tournament this coming weekend.  The tournament features many of the best teams in the Northwest.  We’ll play 3 games on Saturday and a minimum of two on Sunday.  The games will be played at the Kent Service Club Ballfields.  Our girls always bring their best game on Mother’s Day weekends so I’m really excited to see how they come out!  The weather looks decent and the girls are chompin’ at the bit.  We might have something special in store for Sunday…stay tuned.

Here is the Saturday Schedule:

• Game 1:  Federal Way SLAM! -vs- Richmond Islanders 96 — 9AM Field 2
• Game 2:  Federal Way SLAM! -vs- Oregon Panthers —  10:30AM Field 2
• Game 3:  Federal Way SLAM! -vs- Bellevue Blast McCarthy — 2PM Field 4

The first game on Sunday could be as early as 9AM or as late as 10:30.  Breakfast in bed for the mommies, girls.
